What Causes

Dry Eye?

There are many causes of Dry Eye Disease, any of which can cause chronic and life-long symptoms.

Some common causes of Dry Eye include:


  • Certain medications including allergy
    medications and birth control pills

  • Advancing age

  • Rosacea

  • Windy, dusty, or dry eye environments

  • Excess computer use or “screen time”

  • History of Laser eye surgery including
    Lasik, RK, and PRK

  • Autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren’s syndrome,
    Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus

  • Hormonal changes, menopause or peri-menopause

Regardless of the cause of your Dry Eye symptoms, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial. The sooner your meibomian glands can begin healing, the greater your chances of reducing dry eye symptoms before they become chronic.
