What exactly is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (known as MGD)? Well let’s break it down:

Meibomian glands are the tiny oil glands that line the margin of the eyelids, the edges that touch when your eyes close, on both upper and lower lids. These glands secrete oil, called meibum, which coats the surface of the eye and keeps our tears from evaporating quicker than they should. The more oil-secreting out of those glands, the more comfort your eyes are going to experience!

MGD is a common eye condition, yet many people do not even know that they have it. Changes to the amount or quality of the oil, or even the glands themselves, can lead to MGD. The most common thing that happens is the glands becoming blocked which keeps them from secreting oil. Once that starts happening the oil within the glands starts to thicken up and go from the nice oily consistency that we want to more of toothpaste consistency.

MGD is the most common cause of dry eye syndrome (also called dry eye disease). 86% of dry eye comes from not enough oil or not a good quality of the oil. There are many different things that can cause MGD which can include age, medications, contact lenses, computer use, makeup, and autoimmune diseases.

Do not worry, MGD is treatable! The best way to treat MGD is with iLUX, a thermal pulsation treatment. The iLUX treatment applies light-based heat to the eyelid, melting the blocked oils within the glands while applying gentle pressure to express the oil. The iLUX is a small handheld device that allows for a customizable treatment for anyone suffering from MGD and dry eye. After an in-office treatment with iLUX, you will complete your home care to help ensure that your glands continue to improve, and you get all the benefits from your iLUX treatment. Some of these home treatments help to keep the glands open and functioning properly while promoting good healthy oil. Home treatments may include blink exercises, heat masks, and supplements formulated specifically for dry eye. You may have other treatments prescribed depending on other findings at your initial evaluation.
